The night in the desert when Elk whispered to me and my love

This Thanksgiving, I am feeling grateful for memories. In honor of that, I am sharing a story here of one of my fondest...
Enjoy & Happy Turkey Day!
- Katy

~
I have memories of being in the middle of nowhere, late at night, somewhere near the border of New Mexico and Arizona. In my Mini Cooper, with the top down and a girl I loved sitting next to me.

We pulled off the side of the road in pitch black - a new moon that night. We gazed at the stars of the New Mexico sky and took in the cool air - it was around November I think and good and cold at night in the desert there.

As we sat there, we heard a rustling sound. Then some tapping and clicking sounds very close by - within 10 feet I would say.

Without any moonlight and in total darkness, we had no clue what that foreign sound was.  It sort of filled the air with an energy - an incredibly peaceful energy.  Almost like a profoundly soothing static electricity. Literally indescribable.

After studying the darkness, we realized it was a herd of elk. We had been sitting there so quietly for quite a while and I guess this dozen or so elk had wandered up there right next to the car.

The clicking sounds were their massive antlers tapping against each other as they gathered in a small group next to us.
They were communicating amongst themselves and selfishly allowing us to listen in!
We sat that for the longest time and shared that space with those elk. It's a night I will never forget... the night in the desert when Elk whispered to me and my love under the stars.

Getting Your Sexy Back with a Sacral Chakra Breathing Practice(Pranayama)

Connecting to the Sacral Chakra within ourselves can feel very good. It can bring a feeling of joy and increased satisfaction in personal relationships, as well support us emotionally.

The Sacral Chakra connects us with creativity, desire, compassion, satisfaction, pleasure and our emotions. It is located in the area of the reproductive organs, at the base of the pubic bone.  Water is associated with this chakra, as well as the color orange.

Svadhisthana, the Sanskrit name for the Sacral Chakra, is translated as 'one's own abode.'

With a simple breathing exercise (pranayama), you can connect with this built in pleasure center - your own abode. :)
Here's how you do it...
Enjoy!

Much love & light,
Katy

SACRAL CHAKRA BREATHING EXERCISE:
Close your eyes, take a few deep calming breaths. Allow yourself to become grounded, centered and calm in this space.

Hold your left thumb to your left nostril, inhaling green healing light into your right nostril. Pull that breath in as deeply as you can- feel it penetrating your cells as it comes into your body.

Feel it reaching down into your reproductive organs - in the space  between your genitals and your spine.

Now, before exhaling, switch nostrils and close your right nostril with the pinkie & ring finger of your left hand. Exhale, concentrating on this breath, feeling it as a beautiful orange light exiting you. An orange light that fills you with joyful and loving energy.

Repeat this several more times, alternating nostrils along with their associated colors.

Let all of your focus be on the breath and their energies running through you like water. - visualize the energetic water flowing through you and healing you.

When you are done, put your hands down in your lap or in a relaxed way by your sides, taking a few deep full breaths. Bring your awareness back to this place, open your eyes and carry that joyful feeling with you throughout the day.

Repeat as often as you wanna get your sexy back! :)

My Shamanic Journey Journals

I practice shamanism.
I have studied on my own, with the Spirits and with a gifted psychologist and shaman, my dear teacher, Dr. Steve Serr.
I have also attended several workshops over the years and have taught a few of my own, as well as earned some certificates for my studies.  I don’t hang them up however, and generally don’t talk much about the fact that I am a shamanic practitioner.

I mention that it’s an interest of mine and may occasionally tell a story or two about it - sometimes here on my blog, but that’s pretty much it.  That will sometimes cause someone to ask me to journey for them.  I also journey for myself and things, places and animals.

Oh, let me explain what I mean by journey…

A shamanic journey is the trance-like state that a shamanic practitioner enters, where they work with the Spirit world to bring healing, information and peace to people and to the world.  This dreamlike, yet conscious state, is usually achieved through the rhythms of a drum, rattle or other instrument.

These journeys usually last 15 - 60 minutes, depending on the depth of the work being undertaken I suppose.

There are other shamanic techniques, all of which I will not bore you with here.  :)

Over the last few years, I have taken about 300 of these shamanic journeys for myself and others.  I have filled journal after journal with notes about my discoveries in the Spirit World - thoughts, images and pictures of things I have seen on these adventures and scribbled onto the page.  Most often in pencil, sometimes with a crayon or marker or two thrown in there.

If the journey is one I have undertaken on someone else’s behalf, I will always look at my notes as I recall the experience to them.  A few times people have recorded me and I have a dozen or so audio files of myself talking about specific shamanic journeys.  I smell audiobook. :)

As "out there" as this may sound, I actually journeyed recently for my house. Yes, my actual house. There is this fundamental belief I have, that there is life in everything. I studied this especially with shamanism. So, for me, my house has life in it.  It has a past, a present, a future - honestly, my house kind of feels like (to me anyway) like it has a soul. So, why not journey for it?! :)  I've also done a lot of shamanic work with Nature - trees, plants and animals mainly.

It’s always helpful though, to be able to go back and listen to or read these notes, as there is usually something else I will see when I take a second, third or even a fourth look.

Usually, when I am doing shamanic work for someone else, they will take their own notes as I speak about the experience.  It wasn’t until recently that someone asked me if they could make a copy of my actual notes.  As in, put my little pink notebook in a copier and make a copy of the page.

Doing so had honestly never crossed my mind, or the minds of anyone else I’ve ever worked with.

I was surprised by the suggestion and stuttered with, “You want to copy my actual notes? Oh they’re so sloppy - a lot of chicken scratch - writing up on the side of the page and little things I’ve drawn.  I hardly understand them.”

Her wonderful reply, “Oh, but that’s where the true energy of all of this is.  The actual spirit of this experience is in those notes.

It was definitely an ah-ha moment for me.  Like, "you know, she’s right - there is power in these notes."  I saw the funky little bohemian journal I held in my hand differently than I had before - it's actually beautiful - inside and out.  Full of soul.

For a few years now, I have yearned to share my opinion of shamanism and let people know what it’s actually like and how it really works.
What better way to share the true spirit of what shamanism is to me, than to show my actual notes to others.  These pages are full of the mysterious workings of the Spirit world and the kind of information a shamanic practitioner taps into in these worlds.

So, I decided to write a book. :)  One that will show my work from over years in it's raw form. With permission from the people involved of course and probably a name or two being crossed out. I wanted to do this, rather than just go on and on talking about shamanism, with chapter after chapter of explanation of technique, etc.

In this book, I will be providing commentary on each unique journey and lessons and meanings of some of the symbols and characters.
It is my desire that the reader will be able to get a clear picture of how shamanism works from these stories that I will be sharing.

Please stay tuned for more information as I am working on this project. I will create a page on my blog here with a link to some quotes and snippets as I have them.

In love and light,
Katy

Controlled Breathing For Letting In a Little Soul Shine :)

Controlled breathing relaxes you, it's easy to do and takes just a few quick minutes

It's a little technique you can employ anytime throughout the day to let in a little "soul shine." ☀️
It can bring down your heart rate and blood pressure and relax you or prepare you to take on a task, such as speaking in front of a group or handling stressful times - such as those many of us will be facing during the holidays.
Here it goes...
Enjoy!

CONTROLLED BREATHING "PRANAYAMA" EXERCISE:
Close your eyes, take a few deep calming breaths. Allow yourself to become grounded, centered and calm in this space.
Hold your left thumb to your left nostril, inhaling green healing light into your right nostril. Pull that breath in as deeply as you can- feel it penetrating your cells as it comes into your body.
Now, before exhaling, switch nostrils and close your right nostril with the pinkie & ring finger of your left hand. Exhale, concentrating on this breath, feeling it as a blue light exiting you. A blue light of calm loving energy - a light as brilliant as the deep blue of the ocean.
Repeat this several more times, alternating nostrils along with their associated colors.
Let all of your focus be on the breath and their energies running through you.
When you are done, put your hands down in your lap or in a relaxed way by your sides, taking a few deep full breaths. Bring your awareness back to this place, open your eyes and carry that calmness with you throughout the day.

DISTANCE GODDESS MEDITATION & HEALING
A Saturday morning treat for ALL Goddesses :)

One of the most moving experiences I have had as a Reiki practitioner has got to be cooperating virtually with other practitioners to heal and solve world problems.
I recently proposed something similar to a tribe of women, The Atlanta Goddess Women's Group

I named it A DISTANCE GODDESS MEDITATION & HEALING.  It is basically, a Meetup event on the spiritual plane. A time where we can each pause, regardless of where we are physically, to offer and receive healing and light from this Sisterhood of Goddesses.

We hold this virtual event each Saturday morning and anyone that is interested can join us, regardless of where you may be physically.  Just join us spiritually on Saturday mornings from 9 - 9:30am Eastern.

TO PARTICIPATE:
In this healing, you just visualize a Divine Light flowing over and around everyone in the group, enveloping them in pure, healing love and light. Send out that warm light, as well as feel it coming to you, for just a few minutes or for the entire meditation.

I usually find a quiet place, with incense and a candle. Lately, I've been listening Kirtan chants by Blue Spirit Wheel when I meditate and love them! www.bluespiritwheel.com
They'll be performing soon and also participate in classes at Candler Park Yoga - definitely worth checking out!  Faith, the studio owner, described the space as perfect for them acoustically. Check out  Candler Park Yoga's site for more info.

POST MEDITATION FOLLOW UP:
Thank you to all of the Goddesses that took part in the Saturday morning distance meditation.

I had a great experience!

I visualized meeting you other Goddesses along a path - we were dancing our way through a forest towards a meeting place with a Divine Mother in a worn sanctuary hidden deep in the forest. I sent out and received lots of light - thank you all so much!

I hope you'll participate again next week or whenever you have a chance.

Have a beautiful weekend!
Thanks! -Katy

Experience how it can feel to be a tree.

It's no big secret - I love trees!
Most people that know me, know that I talk to trees, hug them, talk about them and so on...
It's probably lesser-known though, that I actually become a tree sometimes. :)
I do.
Through meditation and movement.
I do it because it feels good!  It energizes me and makes me feel grounded and happier.  If you like trying new things and feeling more joy, maybe you could give it a shot. :)

Just in case, here's how I do it...

BECOMING A TREE THROUGH MEDITATION AND MOVEMENT:
First, I create a peaceful space, free of any interruptions. Incense and a candle are nice. If I'm inside, I usually play some nature sounds or music.  If I'm going to be moving while I meditate, then it's with chants or upbeat meditation type of stuff.  If not, I put on something more mellow.

I do this meditation for at least 15 minutes.  It leaves me feeling grounded, stronger, excited and just generally happy. I totally recommend it! :)

Whether you're meditating in one spot or are moving to music, the imagery I use goes like this..

Take several deep and relaxing breaths.
Once you're in a meditative state, begin your journey.

Your journey as a tree.

You are a beautiful tree.
You sprouted from the earth many years ago. Just a seedling then, growing towards the sky.
But, now you are majestic.
Time has made you stronger.
You are a gorgeous, healthy, happy tree.

Dance and enjoy being a tree.

Feel your roots. They extend into the depths of the soil beneath you, Mother Earth nourishing you continuously.

Feel how strong the trunk of your tree is. Feel the texture of your bark.

Feel your branches and leaves.  Feel yourself sprouting and blossoming - reaching for the sky, leaning towards the sun, and bending with the breeze.

Enjoy how it feels being this tree. Absorb the energy, merge with it. You are the tree.

After several minutes of being your tree, start to become aware of the space you are in. Sit here in a relaxed, meditative state and reflect on your journey.

Parents Say The Darnedest Things

I'd like to preface all of this with the fact that my mother is one of my most favorite people on earth. I cherish her like I do my two boys. She is my Mummy and I love everything about being her daughter!  With that being said...

When I was a little girl, my mom used to yell at me if I was caught twirling my hair around my fingers...
She would always chastise me with, "DON'T TWIRL YOUR HAIR!! ONLY CRAZY PEOPLE DO THAT!"

Today, it makes me crack up thinking about it. It's really just hysterical and silly.  I mean, what about twirling your hair exactly, is "crazy" and how is it that my mom knew all of this?  Wondering makes me smile. :)

Was my mother worried I'd end up crazy?  Well, if that was the case, her nightmares have come true!  lol.  Because I would consider myself a tad nutty. And yes, I still twirl my hair. So, I guess it's official. :)

It's one of the reasons why I've reclaimed that word - CRAZY!

I decided to recycle it, and instead use those five letters to describe my adventurous and happy life, which I'm usually saying is crazy good!
Hence, www.LifeIsCrazyGood.com.

Thanks for reading this and the rest of my hodgepodge of blogs. I enjoy sharing recipes and adventures, as well as other spiritual and earthy things.  All of this writing helps me on a very personal level, I hope there is information here that may be useful for you too. :)

Namaste.

Posole - A belly-warming good luck dish from my childhood

There are a few things from my childhood growing up in New Mexico that will always be extra special memories for me.  Now, that I think about it, I'm pretty sure they all revolve around some kind of food.
Maybe that's why I have such a passion for flavors and such a flare for cooking.

The smell of green chiles roasting in the Fall has always been a favorite memory of mine from the Southwest - it's an indescribable aroma, just the most perfect smell!

The green chile, as well as the red New Mexican chile, are staples of most traditional dishes there. Many treats are prepared at particular times of the year. Like posole for example. A red chile pork stew made with hominy. It's usually served at New Year's and is meant to bring good luck throughout the year.

Well, I can always use some good luck. And, with the cold days we have been having, a warm belly would be nice too!  So, I decided to use some dried posole (hominy) that I had in the pantry to mix up a nice pot of posole.

I think, like any stew, that this dish should be unique to you - add what you like. But, at the least usually, it consists of the pork, red chili & hominy. From there, you can throw in garlic, oregano, cilantro, onions, lime juice and anything else you love. I say, make it your own!

Here's my basic RECIPE FOR POSOLE:

Cook a small pork roast in a crockpot on low overnight or throughout the day, adding 8 cups of broth or so. Depending on how big your roast and crockpot are, and how much soup you want to make.

In this crockpot, I put a tablespoon of garlic, a teaspoon of crushed cumin, salt, pepper and a can of tomatoes with green chiles. I also tossed in 3 red NM chili pods that I'll remove the next day.

Wash the dried posole, picking out any rocks or debris. Soak over night covered in water with the same spices you used in the meat, except don't add a can of tomatoes.

The next day, cook your posole on low until it is soft, add the contents of the crockpot and any more spices or ingredients you think would work.
Add a cup of NM Red Chili Sauce (recipe here).

Cook for another hour or so, or until everything is tender and delicious!

Serve topped with fresh sour cream, cilantro, onions, crushed tortilla chips, lime juice or whatever you love.

Freedom IS just another word for nothing left to lose.

"Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose."

I have a particular affinity for this Janis Joplin line from the song, Me & Bobby McGee and thought I'd share a few words as to why...

See, when I turned 40, I sold everything I owned. I kept only a couple boxes of mementos. I had just enough clothes to fit into a backpack, but the rest went. I sold my watch, my antiques, my shoes...literally everything except my toothpaste. No wait, I do remember - I did accidentally sell my toothpaste. Anyway, I was definitely in a state of having nothing left to lose. It was very liberating.

My life has remained pretty much possession-free ever since. I do have a house, but no furniture. Well, I have 1 couch, but the truth is, someone else bought it for me and had it delivered because they thought every adult should at least have a couch.
A few pot and pans - they've all been donated basically, by people that thought I should have those things or had extra stuff they were giving away or whatever.

Almost 3 years after the fact, and I can still fit everything I own into my car within 15 minutes.

For me, that's freedom. I don't have to spend any time worrying about maintaining all the crap I own. I haven't spent a dime buying stuff and really don't have to spend much on anything besides candles, incense and food.
Really all I have to do - feed my dog and wash myself and my clothes.  Yep - it's pretty much that simple. :)

I don't have to maintain anything, dust anything, rearrange anything or do a damn thing really, other than spend my time building fires, walking through the forest in my backyard and meditating in all the clutter-free wide open spaces in this house.

I admit, sometimes I do sit around twiddling my thumbs. That's when I break out the paints or start planning another trip to take. Or I spend that time writing, hence what you're reading right now. :)

For me though, freedom from things, is freedom. Janis was so right...freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose. For me, it is anyway.
Try purging a little and see if maybe it'd suit you too. Simplifying feels really good, trust me. :)

Double Piña Coladas are Twice As Good... & Other Things I Learned South Of The Border.

Here are some videos:  CLICK HERE

I recently returned from a trip to Cancun, Mexico. I soaked up some sun, sucked down some piña coladas, and slept more than I had in forever. It was pure bliss really.  Massages, beach time and room service, mixed in with a night out on the town...ahhhh, I could've stayed there forever.

Not only was the rest and relaxation remarkable, but the pastries and strawberry bellinis were perfection!  I should know, I gorged on them like there was no mañana!
All part of the fact that I was there during Halloween and Dias de Los Muertos - The Days of The Dead, a local tradition honoring the dead.

I made conversation with lots of strangers, like I usually do, and learned a little more Spanish.  I ate until I was miserable, then indulged in whiskey, coffee and brownies delivered to my room.
I pulled the blinds and watched hours and hours of TV, drifting in and out with the 'do not disturb' sign on the door.  It was pure spoiled brattiness and I loved every last minute of it!

I've been to Cancun many times, but this was definitely the best time I had ever had there.
I saw lots of birds, lizards and sea creatures. I also talked to tons of trees, bushes, insects and often directly to the Ocean and Mother Nature.

I would run my bare feet through the sand every morning when I sat on the beach and watched the sun come up, coffee in hand.  It was a very grounding and refreshing experience.

I learned a few things while I was there and figured I'd share them here. Enjoy!..

Stuff I Learned in Mexico :)
~ The end of Oct/beginning of Nov, is the best time to go. Hotels are at their cheapest and it's like being on a deserted island.

~ Double piña coladas are twice as good as single ones.

~ I saved $200 by going to an independent spa for a massage, rather than using the one at the hotel. www.arenasspa.com - tell Victoria that Katy sent you! :)
This place is so nice and very convenient. The best massage I've ever had!  (I swear they're not paying me to say this! Lol)

~ The time changed in Cancun a week before it did in the US, meaning that for a week, they were two hours behind Atlanta, instead of one.

~ They only have US Prime Beef at Ruth Chris. There's no such thing as Mexican Prime... I asked.  The steaks there are phenomenal though, really!  I go here every time I visit Cancun. www.RuthsChris.com

~ The ancient Mayan city of ruins, Chichen Itza, is one of the Wonders of The World.  I've heard, it will take your breath away!  I didn't get to visit this time unfortunately.

~ That horn-type of sound you can hear on the beach there occasionally... it is not a ship, as I had thought that it was. It's actually a beach peddler, blowing into a shell as he walks the beach, selling his wares.

~ Although probably not recommended for Americans, there's this little roadside bar & tortas stand right around mile 12 or 13 in the hotel zone, on the Lagoon side. They have binoculars on the deck on the roof. Also, you can eat out at a table on the dock if you want.
There's an old salsa lady who creeps around upstairs - her concoctions are out of this world!  Ask her for verde y caliente.  No one speaks any English here at all.
And oh, both cheap beer and tequila are available here at breakfast, as well as throughout the day. :)
